I enjoyed this piece but felt the urge to submit a response as the best compliment we can give people we admire for their activism is to be a part of the movement ourselves.

โ€œIt seems reasonable to suggest that engaging in non-violent climate protests may be considered a โ€œsupererogatory dutyโ€ for doctors โ€“ one that cd be considered morally good, given the points above..โ€ As a potential patient, I agree. Reasonable & reassuring. We want Drs who care.

โ€œThe survival of humanity is argued to be at risk, so any utilitarian calculation of proportionality is likely to conclude that short-term nonviolent disruption is a lower threat and proportionate response to the far greater threat of climate devastationโ€ฆโ€

This is a matter of grave concern. One of the explicit duties of doctors is to โ€œ Protect and promote the health of patients and the public.โ€ This is not compatible with being prosecuted and then struck off for taking non-violent direct actionโ€ฆwhat other action is open to us?

Quite.

Time for all health leaders to choose courage over comfort.

โ€œThe profession has not been undermined by her actions & the public is not concerned about one doctor trying to protect them & the planet, but more by the inadequate response of the Govt & organisations, including the GMC, to our overwhelming and unprecedented climate crisisโ€

Sometimes the Law is wrong.

Just a few short weeks ago, you apologised for unjust regulatory action against gay doctors under homophobic laws in the 1980s.

You are repeating the same mistakes

We must not be apologists for unjust laws.

The GMC has failed us all.

Suspending whistleblowing doctors for sounding the alarming on climate devastation rides roughshod over the GMCโ€™s own legal & ethical responsibility to protect patient safety.

All health leaders should call this out urgently.

Iโ€™ve tried hard to avoid the PA debate.

I quit paediatrics in 2017 because the culture, enabled by some consultants, was toxic.

I would encourage the specialty to focus on creating compassionate cultures, so they stop losing doctors, rather than taking recruitment shortcuts.
