Thank you to Christian Wakeford MP for speaking openly about the recently released Office for National Statistics (ONS) alcohol specific death stats.

Alcohol is a complex and prevalent issue.

An alcohol strategy is needed from the government to tackle alcohol harm and end stigma in the UK.

Important investigation by the BMJ about the influence that alcohol-industry funded bodies currently have in our schools and universities. Our children and young people should be able to learn about alcohol harm free from such influence.

This is what happens when you fail to protect children from alcohol marketing, and a Govt that fails to see that UK alcohol marketing controls are weak. Whoever forms the new Govt must act. A vast majority of citizens want proper action on alcohol harm theguardian.com/society/2024/a…

Freezing duty doesn't help pubs, despite what Jeremy Hunt claimed in today's Budget.

It helps supermarkets maintain much lower prices than pubs, encouraging people to drink more at home and not in pubs.

Today's budget includes a freeze on alcohol duties until February 2025, on the grounds of supporting pubs and the hospitality sector.

Here's a thread of reasons why this is daft:

Yet again a Chancellor who freezes duty (cutting it in real terms) on the basis of it helping pubs. It doesn’t. It helps supermarkets.

If you actually want to help pubs - the draught relief is literally a tax cut just for them. Why not use that?

Unbelievable the chancellor has announced yet another alcohol duty freeze when harms are at record levels & with more people dying from alcohol than ever. Like tobacco, alcohol is a group 1 carcinogen - yet it’s treated like an essential commodity by Government
