eminabec unusual_whales Why aren't student loans dischargeable in bankruptcy?

Because in 2005 the proverbial influence peddling 'Senator from MBNA' helped pass legislation stripping them of bankruptcy protection.

And who was the Senator from MBNA?

Joe Biden.

President Biden More means-tested policies? We're over it. You have the authority to wipe out student loan debt. Why the hesitation to free us from economic despair?

President Biden Do you remember signing the joint consolidation loan separation act in oct?! Did you know DOE won’t implement until late 2024? 😳 thereafter excluding us from all federal benefits and programs including PSLF!

eminabec Ed Krassenstein These responses are hilarious. If The Democrats are SO CONCERNED with losing to Trump, they will keep their promises on student loans (return bankruptcy, cancel).

If they are ok with losing EVERYTHING to protect , they'll keep doing what they're doing.

'You voluntarily took out a student loan' is such childish, simplistic nonsense.

Did I volunteer to be born into a family without intergenerational wealth?
To have a disabled parent?
To live in a red state that defunded higher ed because they're scared of educated Blacks?

Average PPP Loan amount: $107,000

Average federal student loan amount: $37,338

If we can cancel PPP Loans, we can cancel student debt.

This is what I have left to buy groceries and gas President Biden for two weeks. Can’t wait to add student loan payment back into the mix. Greed has killed 🇺🇸

Shibetoshi Nakamoto Nina Turner A student loan isn't really a loan, in the traditional sense.

You can't get rid of the debt through bankruptcy.

There is no statute of limitations on collectors, unlike most other forms of debt.

The government can even collect student loan payments from Social Security…

You can say that again!

We bail out the rich with tax breaks; we bail out members of Congress’ PPP loans; we bail out banks and automobile industries. But when it comes to our want-to-be-somebody students, all hell breaks loose.

It’s time for student debt relief.

unusual_whales DeSantis is right about this:

'Make the colleges and universities foot the bill. And let student loans be dischargeable in bankruptcy.'

A group of nearly 90 Democratic members of Congress — including Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Senate Majority Leader Schumer — urged President Biden to do more to address student loan relief in a letter Wednesday night. nbcnews.com/politics/congr…
