Urmila Anandh CMC Vellore Suceena Alexander Sundar Sankaran Sundaram Hariharan The first Kolff twin-coil artificial kidney dialysis machine arrived in India in 1961, donated to the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, as a gift from the Christian Mission of USA.
1st Indian to receive dialysis in May 1961 was Gopeshwar Prasad Sahi, Maharaja of Hathwa, Bihar, who had developed “chronic uremia", at CMC Vellore. Initial sessions were supervised by Dr Satoru Nakamoto, sent by Dr Willem Kolff, & trained Dr Phillip Koshy Arvind Canchi (Conjeevaram)🇮🇳
The 1st successful live donor kidney transplant in India was performed on 2nd February 1971 by Dr. Mohan Rao at CMC, Vellore with Dr. K V Johnny (nephrologist), Dr. Martin Isaac (Anaesthetist) & Dr. H S Bhat (Chief Urology) on Shanmugam (patient) (all in pic) Hasan Jawaid Khan
