I did my PhD at Essex and it was by far and away the best scholarly community I've been part of. Unfortunately management seem to want everyone involved with it to be too exhausted to think.

But a huge chunk of the business of universities is research. Teaching is statutorily meant to be research-led. When is that research going to happen?

Academics struggle as it is to take vacation. Both research and rest gone. More long-term illness due to stress. This is so bleak.

Essex UCU University of Essex I did my BA at this wonderful university and I truly hope that the management listen to the staff who make it such a splendid place to learn. Some 40 years on, I look back on my 3 years with affection and awe that I had this time to read, think and learn.
