Happy #AutismAcceptanceWeek! Privileged to have Avoiding Ableist Language as a resource for my Neurodiversity Studies module/class MSc Psychology and Learning Disability & for students to at times cite & otherwise implement the ideas to support their research. Basis of paper stems from autistic community🔗👇
This is a core principle of MSc Psychology and Learning Disability MSc online part-time course. In fact, the Critical Intellectual Disability Studies module (class) by Dr Karl Nunkoosing is being taught concurrently w/ Neurodiversity Studies by Steven Kapp. We emphasize issues of inclusion, access, rights.
A post by our own aut-cademic Steven Kapp to move from #AutismAcceptanceWeek (the cultural zeitgeist with Autism Acceptance Day recognised President Biden Biden) toward Autism Appreciation Week (hat tip Fearofquicksand) as awareness of the neurodiversity framework and movement spreads.
Autistic adults and parents of autistic children needed for a study on views on interventions via a short online questionnaire which would not take more than 10 minutes. Please help if you can! To learn more about the study and/or take part click here! portsmouthpsych.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8i…
Our own Emine Gurbuz (she/her) found autistic (vs non-autistic) had less expectation of being liked. Greater anticipation of rejection related to social anxiety, not autistic traits. Study suggests need to change attitudes to improve autistics' social experiences. rdcu.be/dFfZ0
Archiving neurodiversity movement is responsibility & privilege. Martijn Dekker 🇪🇺 recently published origins of neurodiversity (he told me long ago he may have but didn’t manage to look), which led to an academic letter to the editor a group of us wrote, & now this article quoting us.
Katie Munday Autistic & Living the Dream - Katie Munday will start a funded PhD on gender diverse autistic adults' experiences in health and social care, supervised by our own Steven Kapp. Katie previously partnered with Harley Bruce & Steven on Harley's related MSc Psychology and Learning Disability thesis: liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/au…
Only just got round to reading properly this brilliant letter by Monique Botha is actually they/them 🤷🏻♀️ Robert Chapman Morénike Giwa Onaiwu, PhD (she/they) Steven Kapp Dr Abs Ashley doesn't use tw*tter anymore Nick Walker in Autism Journal on the collective development of the neurodiversity concept. Well done to all involved 👏 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/13…
On June 6 at 4 pm BST our own Emine Gurbuz (she/her) will give a CRAE talk about her participatory research w/ Steven Kapp Beatriz Lopez & Lauren Marsh in partnership w/ autistic & non-autistic students & support staff at UK universities. To register: crae.ioe.ac.uk/events/
Accomplishments keep accumulating for a paper based on a MSc Psychology and Learning Disability MSc thesis. Former student Harley Bruce, insider researcher Autistic & Living the Dream - Katie Munday, & supervisor Steven Kapp were excited our paper made it into the LGBTQIA+ Autism In Adulthood issue in 2023 also in time for Pride Month
ICYMI: our Neurodiversity Studies module coordinator & personal tutor Steven Kapp has a response to sloth communism's essay in Boston Review on the neurodiversity movement's future, on shifts in language and attitudes as necessary but insufficient progress. bostonreview.net/forum_response…
It was great to see the autistic and autism communities at Centre for Interaction, Development and Diversity's We Need to Talk About Autism event yesterday. Good community discussions. Thanks to Emine Gurbuz (she/her) as chief organiser, Iris Nomikou - @[email protected] jon adams FRSA Holly Radford Autistic & Living the Dream - Katie Munday Alessandra Fasulo Beatriz Lopez Elinor Lim
See below for a link to blogs by my incoming PhD student Autistic & Living the Dream - Katie Munday, a presentation by me, and the free paper led by my former MSc Psychology and Learning Disability student Harley Bruce, on our research on experiences of non-binary and transgender autistic adults seeking gender-affirming healthcare.
Our MSc Psychology and Learning Disability alumni have enjoyed the MSc course on Psychology and Learning Disability (ID, autism, neurodiversity) - several are giving back to UoP Dept of Psychology. Two are giving separate talks to current PaLD students and one has lectured undergraduates on Educational Psychology.
“As awareness of #neurodiversity rises, so do attitudes associated with it. Representations of autism in the media and popular culture have begun to improve, in part because of neurodiversity activists.” By Steven Kapp: bostonreview.net/forum_response…
ICYMI Autism In Adulthood has highest impact factor of not only autism (as 2022) but also developmental psychology journals! While there are neurodiversity-lite/co-opting imposters, this is a genuine ex. of neurodiversity movement entering establishment (see pp 14, 253 in my book).
Autistic university students in the UK, Emine Gurbuz (she/her), Lauren Marsh, Beatriz Lopez and I partnered w/ autistic students University of Portsmouth Uni of Nottingham #WeAreUoN to create a questionnaire on your support experiences at uni👇Please RT University of Portsmouth News UoP Faculty of Science & Health UoP Dept of Psychology UoP PsychSoc
Congratulations to MSc Psychology and Learning Disability graduate and 2023 UoP Dept of Psychology Graduation Speaker addie - mental health matters on becoming a PhD student! From failing A-levels (in Addie's words) to studies The Open University and University of Portsmouth shows how suitable distance-learning programmes can meet students' needs.
