The closing anecdote from Valerie R Wilson captures something I heard from many people about his influence. Working for him early in her career helped convince her to stay in econ. When she told him she was returning to grad school, he told her: “We need you in the profession.”

This is hard to process. Rodney was the type of academic I aspire to be. He was a good person. My heart goes out to his family.

This is a terrible loss to the economics profession and to people of goodwill.
