Straight to Iceland, ESCADINHAS?
For this #whimbrel , it would be a first. In spring 2022 it aborted northward migration across Atlantic Ocean north of Canaries. In 2023 it remained in Norway for the summer. Individual #shorebirds revealing their secrets: globalflywaynetwork.org/tracks/species…
It is not unusual for bar-tailed #godwit UNO to be first among Bijagós 'winterers' to start #migration to #Arctic #breeding areas, but not as early as this year . Departure on 17 April compares with take-offs on 28, 23, 20 & 25 April in previous 4 years.

Neat tracking by Global Flyway Network!
In #Icelandic Black-tailed Godwits, research by Jen Gill (she/her). José A. Alves & Tómas Gunnarsson shows that new generations are on earlier schedules than older birds.

@Iceland_Review Two corrections:
30% of #Iceland 's Oystercatchers don't migrate:

Rest fly to Britain, Ireland & coastal Europe (not Africa/Asia):

Godwits trump airport.
Thanks to everyone who supported José Alves and colleagues in their efforts to point out deficiencies in early impact assessment.

Fantastic news - the #TagusAirport is finally stopped. A rare but incredibly important win for conservation!
The news that broke some weeks ago is confirmed.👇
An important victory for Godwits and other migratory birds for whom the Tagus is a key node in the migratory network. 🥳 Hats off once again to the Eco Flyway team for proving the cynics wrong and that science matters! 💪✊
What a fantastic handful of resightings from #waders read by a local team that is carrying out bird surveys in the #Bijagós archipelago as part of Nelson Gomes' MSc.
Congrats!

Exciting times to look at the Global Flyway Network website, where you can join migratory birds on their epic flights like a virtual Nils Holgersson.
Following the journeys of our feathered protagonists, you'll quickly find yourself cheering them on as they go. globalflywaynetwork.org
March #wader mist-netting session in the Tagus Estuary. Low numbers but good selection of species, blackwit, barwit, grey p, redshank, dunlin, curlew sand & turnstone. Few more gps/gsm tags deployed! #biodiversity #conservation
