7/ This is all an intermediate step on the road to the world becoming admixed and everyone getting their genome sequenced, at which stage we will no longer need to figure out how to ration testing and we can hopefully abandon the need to be aware of community risks.

6/ But it has to be done responsibly. The answer is not to avoid talking about race and ethnicity, but to work with communities to get their preferences first and foremost, and then bring options to the table to serve their health needs and allow them to make choices.

5/ Our goal should be to offer the genetic testing benefits we currently offer to Ashkenazi Jewish patients to all communities.

4/ In effect, this is what is offered to my patients of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. What's nice is that these families now appear to believe that the utility of the focused testing we can offer them now outweighs the stigma originally feared.

3/ But if you have a patient who self-describes to be from a specific group, and they have symptoms of a condition known to be more prevalent in that community which is defined by a degree of inter-relatedness, you're provide better care if you know about that increased risk.

2/ The NASEM report cited (reference 3) rightly warns against the misuse of racial and ethnicity descriptors as proxies for genetic ancestry. Let's not use poor categories in ways that mislead and cause stigmatisation.

I respect what the journal editors in the citation below are trying to do. But if you serve minoritised communities as a geneticist, you should be trying to provide better care by paying attention to your patient's ancestry.
