A great team from Nosterfield Nature Reserve planted over 1000 local wetland plants this morning as part of the restoration of Heidelberg Materials UK Ripon quarry. Plants all propagated from locally collected material. Improving the Ure valley for wildlife.
We are having another go at re- introducing Tower Mustard ( Turritis glabra). -Thanks to Alex Prendergast for the seed. This time we are protecting them from the start; the rabbits like the leaves the deer eat the flowerheads.
There are some wetland plants we grow at Nosterfield Nature Reserve habitat creation nursery where germination can be erratic, so we use veg. prop. too. Here are some vigorous rhizomes of Blunt-flowered rush (Juncus subnodulosus). Belt & braces.
A guide to establishing Great Fen-sedge & Tufted Sedge swamp has been added to Nosterfield Nature Reserve website, alongside advice on propagating these plants, creating species-rich reedfen, germinating wild seeds and wetland planting techniques:

It's that time of year again- at Nosterfield Nature Reserve habitat creation nursery. 70+ seedlots started a cold stratification in the fridge last week. It includes a few species which germinate when fresh, but if you miss that chance, a cold treatment is often needed.
At the habitat creation nursery Nosterfield Nature Reserve we often propagate a species using both seed and splitting. Here are some vigorous- looking splits of Grey Club-rush (Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani). These splits will be big enough to plant out next year.
The habitat creation nursery Nosterfield Nature Reserve has grown wetland plants for 5 years. Yesterday with our partners High Batts - In at the Start project💙 the new Great Fen Sedge planting at Pennycroft (Ripon Quarry) was extended. Final water levels unknown, but this species has thrived on other sites.
In the 5yrs we've been growing wetland plants at Nosterfield, we've devised many new propagation techniques.
These methods are on our website for all to use, inc. our new 'method for establishing large wetland plants'. Follow link to read:
