Thanks to Ben Longdon: posting @[email protected] and all the lovely folks from University of Exeter and beyond for a day of excellent talks and great chats around the ecology and evolution of disease emergence yesterday! Had lots of fun talking about how (not) to model viral reservoirs. Looking forward to day two!

Thought I might tweet about this, but ⬇️ says all of what I would probably have said and more. Having your privilege challenged 👏 is 👏 not 👏 discrimination 👏 against you… incendiary statements from people in positions of power won’t solve our problems, open discussion will!

MSA diversity is key for #AlphaFold2's accuracy. Larger databases == better results. So, we generated MSAs from 22 peta-bytes of SRA data and show that ColabFold could have improved from rank 11 to 3 at CASP15. ⅕ 📄 biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 💾 doi.org/10.5281/zenodo…

We're delighted to share our latest publication in which we use #AlphaFold2 to explore membrane fusion in hepatitis C virus and its relatives. Our work suggests these viruses may possess a previously unknown fusion mechanism. This may prove important for vaccine development.

TIL: this hella creepy looking black iris phenotype (which I first saw at St Abb's Head) today is likely a marker of previous HPAI infection in Northern Gannets (Morus bassanus). Intriguing and as yet poorly understood finding from Jude Lane doi.org/10.1101/2023.0…
