Come visit Edinburgh, Vivek! Delicious dosas, tattie scones, beautiful sea views & welcoming people. It’s the Miami of the North…

People often feel like they’re too old to start something new but there’s always the chance of today to get going in that direction. However long the path, it starts with a tiny step in that direction. Even if it’s telling yourself: “Yes, I can do this. It’s possible.”

Super interesting research. The answer is at least partly that elephants’ cells have an astounding twenty copies of p53, a cancer repair gene. Ours have just one. scientificamerican.com/article/why-el…

Just in line w/ a woman loudly rattling off disinformation about COVID19 vax. Not wanting a verbal contretemps, I airdropped this photo to every phone around me. Can’t be sure but I think I hit the target based on heads swiveling around and overhearing the word “cyberattack”.

Get serious about supply-side economics? In the UK the biggest supply constraint is people: healthy workers. Millions are on waiting lists for surgery or specialised services, including for mental health. Illlness = economically inactive. Prof. Devi Sridhar theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

In the chaos of UK govt politics, other news is getting lost. What issues do you think need to be covered in global public health? What do you want to read more about?

What a contrast btwn brilliant students I've met at Edinburgh Uni today- studying public health & wanting a better world with humility, openness & integrity- and what's been happening recently in UK govt. Uni students fill me with hope & optimism for the future.

Many people asking me about whether to go for booster appointment. I would run to the clinic if offered a booster (specifically bivalent- tailored to recent COVID variant). The mixed messaging on boosters imho due to: cost per vaccine, supply & 'anti-vax' views becoming trendy.

Lost among the headlines is that the U.K. govt is pulling back from its global health & foreign aid commitments. U.K. has been pillar of global health financing alongside the US govt and the Gates Foundation for past three decades.
