To avoid detection, the larva of the wavy-lined emerald moth (𝘚𝘺𝘯𝘀𝘩𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘒 𝘒𝘦𝘳𝘒𝘡𝘦) does something extremely clever: it makes itself a disguise by "wearing" the petals of whatever plant it's feeding on. Genius.

#HBES2024 Plenary #3: Dorsa Amir shows why evolutionists need to study children: many populations are mostly kids, we spend long time as kids. Kids learn mostly from other kids, so peer culture differs from vertically transmitted culture. Very interesting!

Here’s your time machine to ~25,000 years ago: this is probably the same behavior ancient humans saw around the time they started domesticating dogs.

A cool artifact and an unintentional visual illusion from Ancient Rome: very difficult to see the hand as concave, your mind keeps correcting it to convex.

People avoid taking extra resources to signal cooperativeness, and others respond by cooperating with them. Conversely, people who take extra resources have difficulty finding partners, and those partners are likely to defect. From Aaron Baker, Dorsa Amir & Katherine McAuliffe #SPP2024

Honestly, the religions that worshipped the sun were onto something? The source of life & sustenance. Daily death & resurrection. Planets circling around it in eternal worship. And the punishment for daring to look at it is to be blinded like some ancient mythological figure??

You can see where you are looking! This image by Akiyoshi Kitaoka lets you see your own eye movements, which create a little light-gray 'spotlight' wherever you point your eyes. The spotlight isn't really there; your mind is making it!

New manuscript, led by the dev psychologist Ivan Kroupin (Helen Elizabeth Davis & TC Zeng). Nearly all research on cognitive development (IQ, executive function, memory, etc.) is done in schooled worlds--in communities in which children are raised by people who attended formal schools.

I was reading about Cleopatra recently & looked up her family tree because it was getting confusing & uh... this is insane? The more you look at it, the worse it gets. She had *one* set of great^3-grandparents. A person with no incest in their family would have sixteen.

Excited to share that I've been awarded an European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant! Our team will be investigating how children's independent peer cultures evolve, and what they contribute to community adaptation.
