“what struck me most about those who are protesting is how long they waited. the restraint they showed. not the spontaneity, the restraint. they waited and waited for justice. and it didn’t come. no one talks about that...” - Toni Morrison

Beautiful and massive gathering today led by Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine. We stood to together and locked arms in defense, support, and protection of our students who were brutalized yesterday as they gathered peacefully. We protect us.

NEW: UT Austin released 'protest rules' that say 'individuals may not come to campus without authorization,' which is in direct contradiction to a video they published 6 months ago that says members of the public can 'come to campus at any time and engage in demonstrations.'

The crowd at the Palestinian solidarity protest at UT Austin is five times the size of the protest that State Troopers forcefully arrested yesterday. This is the Barbara Streisand Effect in action.

There is a massive crowd here at UT Austin today after over 50 students were arrested for peacefully protesting yesterday.

I’m here in solidarity with everyone who was subject to those terrible events.

Back at UT Austin for day two of protests. This one says it is both intended to support Gaza and to condemn the police response yesterday.

The crowd is at least 5x larger than the crowd that showed up yesterday at this time. Peaceful, quiet. Very little law enforcement presence.

If you’re faculty at a university where there are protests, remember there are lots of ways to support, publicly & privately, tenured or not. Here’s a few:
-Know your faculty rights & rules
-Amplify protest info on your social media, privately to colleagues or in class

Thanks for this timely reminder of UT Austin’s supposed support for free speech on campus! Why has policy changed so drastically in 6 months Jay Hartzell?

✴️The Texas AAUP-AFT is appalled that State Troopers were called onto a Texas university campus & arrested students who were peaceably assembled. Campuses should be places for our students to learn without fear of arrest by state troopers in riot gear. aaup-utaustin.org/2024/04/24/pre…
