This week, the UK will likely pass a law saying Rwanda is 'safe' to deport asylum seekers to. Meanwhile, I was recently denied boarding on a flight to Rwanda, presumably because of my journalism on the treatment of refugees there. (THREAD) 1/

And so another mission comes to an end. I think history will judge this deployment (SAMIM) as a failure.

Too few soldiers, not enough air assets and other support equipment, regional disputes, lack of funding, etc.

Sad, because Moz really deserves stability and growth.

I support @DailyMaverick's NB act of shutting down for 24 hrs to draw attention to the funding crisis facing journalism in SA & globally. Journalism is a public good & is essential for a healthy democracy. One cannot overstate the situation which is far worse in the Global South.

A timely reminder that for the hundreds of thousands forced to flee , their problems are not over when they cross the border: itself is one of the two or three poorest places in the world, in perpetual near-crisis and utterly unequipped to cope with this influx.

One year ago today: the beginning of a year of destruction in Sudan.
Catastrophic conflict over the following year has forced nearly 9 million people to flee their homes, triggering the world's biggest displacement crisis and potentially the world's biggest famine.

A shocking, perhaps catalytic, comparison about aid to Sudan today after 1 year of war. Save the Children US says 5 times more money raised to rebuild cathedral (burnt 5 years ago) than to help millions suffering in Sudan. savethechildren.net/news/sudan-hum…

For months, I spoke to 3 Sudanese women about the war. In anticipation for the 1 year mark of this devastating war, I tried to tell the story of the country through their eyes.

Here is my attempt below. My long read for Al Jazeera English
