💥New! When Conor Gearty started teaching his course Freedom and the Law in Britain, he thought that calls of the UK becoming a policy state were exaggerated, and that things were as hard for protestors as they had always been. He soon changed his mind. blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandpol…

Macron: At the end of the WW1 Paul Valéry remarked that we now know our civilizations are mortal. We must be clear about the fact that today, our Europe is mortal. It can die. It can die and it all depends on our choices. These choices have to be made now. geopolitique.eu/en/2024/04/26/…

Please, I want to descend these steps in a hail of Sobrani smoke, holding something pink & lethal in a martini glass, wearing a hostess dress with sleeves big enough to shelter a Shetland pony & make an acidic toast that turns tearful & ends in screaming at my guests to get out

Final plug (this week) for Aveek Bhattacharya and my edited collection

We asked a group of leading economists to consider Labour’s economic policy

What do they believe? Will it work? And how could they make it better?

Or Bukharin's joke (before he was executed). Apparently told in England. 'We also have a two-party system. One party is in power, the other in jail.'

Our wonderful Judy Dempsey is stepping down from Carnegie Europe's blog (but not from the Carnegie family 🙂) so we are looking for a new Editor.

Her shoes are too big to fill, so we are open to ideas. Take a look at the advert here:

Economics professor brutalized on a college campus for speaking her mind.
I wonder whether all these opinion writers obsessed with 'woke' who have endlessly claimed there is 'stifling of free speech' and 'cancel culture' on campuses will also write about this.

A very good thread on the manipulation of 'protest' for nefarious ends, by authoritarian and anti-democratic entities.

Reform UK’s company-like structure has Nigel Farage right at the top as a director and majority shareholder, but he doesn’t consider himself a politician.

Carolin Fohlin is one of the economists whose work I admire the most. I saw her speak in 2016 at Goethe-Universität when she was a guest professor for financial history. She's a leading scholar of the history of German finance and corporate governance. She knows what fascism looks like.
