This is why Neon - Serverless Postgres we didn't invest in BYOC (bring your own cloud) and went the Snowflake route: database is a URL. Multi-tenancy is a huge deal

Claudia Goldin just won the Nobel in economics “for having advanced our understanding of women’s labour market outcomes”.

If you want to get an overview of the data, here is our page on the topic, to which she gave us extremely good feedback at the time:

This is a pretty big deal. Missing queue semantics was a major thorn in our side WePay Engineering, and one of the main reasons we had other non-Kafka streaming systems (pubsub and redis, to name a few).

How (and why) Kafka is implementing efficient queue semantics. Now each Kafka topic will now be accessible as both a partitioned log and a queue.

Queues for Kafka (KIP-932), my biggest ask for Apache Kafka since joining Confluent. Really excited about this one. It's not just queue semantics, but queues which can do replay.

The new end-to-end encryption feature is cool. Basically annotate sensitive fields in the schema registry and have the clients automatically encrypt those fields with customer-managed keys. Confluent cannot ever access that data.

Starting my day off with Jay Kreps at “Reality happens in real time.” So does business, but technology constraints forced us into batch paradigms. It’s beyond time to break that paradigm.

Really interesting breakdown of one of the key decisions in building a cloud data service by Jack Vanlightly. Long story short: there is a reason all the biggest and best cloud services (from S3 to Snowflake) aren't just puppeteering per-customer clusters in the customer VPCs.
