If you’re “pro-ribeye,” you have to grapple with what that entails: supporting an industry that’s fueling climate change, water/air pollution, labor violations, zoonotic risk, animal suffering. I get it, meat tastes good, but it’s weird to oppose humane/sustainable alternatives.

There couldn't be a bigger indictment of the USDA than this: running a 'climate-friendly' beef program w/ millions of taxpayer dollars, already ridiculous, then, to protect 'trade secrets,' hiding all the info from the public about *how* Tyson claims it is reducing emissions 🫠

banning lab-grown meat is one of the most insane policies of our time. I don't know what argument there can be for it other than:
(1) believing that nobody should be allowed to choose meat that didn't suffer or
(2) wanting to ensure ranchers have their profits protected

In this wild story, the dairy industry reportedly lobbied to remove a vegan blue cheese from receiving an industry award.

Plant-based alternatives are not competing on a level playing field.

Waste and feces from factory farms is a major problem.

A new analysis shows that factory farms produce more waste than UK's ten largest cities -- 'Collectively, they produce the equivalent of over 120 double decker busloads of excreta per hour.'

Hundreds of bodies were uncovered in mass graves in Palestine, some reportedly with their hands bound together.

The IDF claims they were 'terrorists' but has no evidence to prove this.

The shocking violence against peaceful protestors -- all to protect a foreign government from just criticism.

These universities will look back on this era in shame, as they now look back on their crackdown on Vietnam War protestors.

The meat industry's war on wildlife: Each year, a federal program kills 1.5 to 5 million wild animals, most of them in an effort to protect the livestock industry. Ex-employees and conservationists say it's ineffective and inhumane. vox.com/future-perfect…

Leather manufacturing emissions are roughly 7X that of pleather.

Even assuming the preposterous premise that life cycle emissions for leather should omit all impacts from animal farming, the industry’s own data show that it’s worse than polyurethane.

The thing I worry more about the most now is land use, agriculture, and food.

We aren't making progress here. In fact, we are sliding backwards.

New EPA numbers on greenhouse gas emissions. Same old story.

Major new initiatives and changes, especially in livestock production, are needed to make food & farming close to low-carbon. thebreakthrough.org/issues/food-ag…

1. This week’s column is about something we badly want to believe, regardless of the evidence: that livestock farms are benign and harmonious. Why? Mostly, I think, because it chimes with books and cartoons we see as very young children. theguardian.com/commentisfree/… Also: a thread

I'm not surprised at all -- the US meat industry has been ramping up their lobbying efforts to influence climate initiatives quite a bit recently.

Their motivation is the same as Big Oil -- protect profits at all costs, including the cost of a liveable climate.
