22 yrs ago today, an Al-Qaeda suicide squad in Afghanistan posing as journalists sat down w/Ahmad Shah Massoud, who was leading the Afghan resistance to the Taliban.
They assassinated him — pre-payment to the Taliban for harboring AQ post-9/11.
#neveforget : Same Taliban now.
Great job everyone who emailed their Senators to ask them to support the #AfghanAdjustmentAct . This is the energy we need. Don’t let up.
Taliban authorities in Afghanistan are committing the crime against humanity of gender persecution against women and girls, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. hrw.org/news/2023/09/0…
Tracks Lynne O'Donnell😎 reporting, July ‘23:
“In markets that have sprung up across the southern and eastern badlands… merchants with Taliban permits are offering U.S.-made automatic assault rifles and handguns... Business, like terrorism, is thriving.”

If you haven’t had a chance to read University of Michigan law professor Karima Bennoune’s paper in the Columbia Law Review on #GenderApartheid in #Afghanistan , you absolutely must.
Here’s the link on her work and the paper.

Went on a bit of a Twitter hiatus this summer but I’m back.
Lots to share about growing surveillance in Afghanistan (62,000 CCTV cameras, re: Hajira Maryam Amnesty Tech), supporting the gender apartheid movement through our data-driven work at Ehtesab and more.
I’m no expert but doesn’t this hold by Coach Tommy Tuberville also impact these ppl’s pay and their pensions and retirement benefits? Yes let’s talk about the national security implications and the decorum at issue but also it’s messing with people careers, denigrating service records.
