@jsondowns

I’m going to regret this. Startup founder, reluctant Twitter-joiner, temporarily semi-anonymous until I get my bearings here.

I remember the first time I got one of these as a pre-revenue founder and I was FREAKING OUT, before I realized there was an "alternate calculation method" that they don't tell you up-front.

Come on, I love Austin but it's not even the top food city within Texas, never mind the whole country (Houston top TX food city of course).

Hopefully nobody. Release us from this fucking hell of constant accountability. The rise of ubiquitous cameras gave birth to the most stressful period of human history, and the development of totally perfect deep fakes is our only way out.

If you try to "align" an AI in a way that's at odds with the truth, you make it more dangerous, because lies are dangerous. It's not enough to mean well. You actually have to get the right answers.

I find the media’s takes on SpaceX’s achievement utterly outrageous. It’s straight out of Ayn Rand novels. What is the game here? Usually incentives explain these things but there isn’t even a follow the money type motive that I can detect? It’s just tribalism? nihilism?

The best-case scenario that could come from this is people start realizing papers, in undergrad at least, are not a good way to assess knowledge of a subject, but only how well you can write papers. I've been banging this drum for a while, maybe now profs' hands will be forced.

Fighting tall poppy syndrome will be one of the defining battles of our age. I worry it is only going to get worse in the near term.

“There’s no guarantee to free speech on misinformation or hate speech and especially around our democracy.” Yes, there is. It’s called the First Amendment. You might’ve heard the words “misinformation” and “disinformation” thrown around by political figures from the left,

In America, we value free speech, including conversations like the one Elon Musk is having tonight with ideas and opinions people may dislike or even find offensive. We don't censor. Ironic, this used to be a European idea advocated by someone named John Stuart Mill.

This is super-encouraging that (some) people in the EU are willing to listen to people like @levelsio and his very sensible recommendations. Still bearish on Europe overall as long as the Thierry Bretons of the world are in charge but this gives me hope.
