So, the government shuts down in six weeks unless House Republicans get their shit together, and any plausible deal to reopen the government will require the new speaker to strike a deal with Democrats.

I wonder if the next speaker lasts until Christmas.

The chaos we are seeing in our democracy may also be the last gasp of an old order leaving the stage, from which a more inclusive, more equitable, truer 21st Century democracy can emerge.

You have it entirely backwards. The question is how long it takes the 'mainstream' House Republicans to realize with a 5-seat majority, the ONLY way to elect a Speaker who doesn't constantly have to serve at the mercy of Matt Gaetz is by giving power concessions to Democrats.
