Full of admiration for Edward Berger’s new imagining of All Quiet on the Western Front. For me, it takes its place among the greatest war films of all time. As cinema, it’s almost impossible to fault. netflix.com/gb/title/81260…

I've just had this piece published in the Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History (currently on open access). With the death of Elizabeth II scholars need access to the archives on the complex history of the monarchy's relations with the Commonwealth.

Opinion | “If scholars can’t write accurate histories of the Queen’s reign, drama is what we’ll continue to rely on”

“We need a proper debate about our shared imperial histories. So far as the papers on the reign of Elizabeth II are concerned, historians must make the case for their rapid release.”

As Catholic child, All Souls’ Day had a firmer grip on my imagination than Hallowe’en - because it was presented as reality rather than fantasy. Remember serving on the alter of a nearly empty church on 2 Nov, feeling surrounded by the anxious dead. unherd.com/2020/11/how-we…

Daniel Smith, who has just died, may have been the last surviving child of a US slave. He was ‘born in 1932, the fifth of six children of Abram “AB” Smith, who had been born into slavery, the property of a white man, in Massies Mill, Virginia, in 1862.’

In this new piece in ⁦HistoryExtra⁩ I argue that unless the Palace cooperates in opening up the archives of the reign of Elizabeth II, dramas like the Crown will continue to play a disproportionate role in shaping public perceptions of the monarchy. historyextra.com/period/21st-ce…

Braverman is not, alas, the first to cast migration as an 'invasion' or to accuse liberals of betraying their country. This is from Enoch Powell's 1970 speech on 'The Enemy Within':

'Britain is as much at risk now as ... when Germany was building dreadnoughts or Nazism rearming'
