Back page of AW from 7th April 1973 - road races listed for men are 4 miles, 6 miles, 8 miles, 20 miles & a marathon. Just one road race for women & it's one mile!

I'm not running #CrossCountry this year. Partly because I want to slightly reduce my running overall so am prioritising #fellrunning and the big hills it brings. Partly because XC still isn't RunEqual. In my local league, women are not allowed to run the same distance as men.

'On January 5, RunEqual submitted their first proposal to the NCAA, in which their main demand was that men and women race the same distance in cross-country, across all three divisions, by 2023.'

Today was the first equal distance fixture of Oxon XC League - lovely to hear of yet another league making the switch. Congrats to everyone who raced, officiated and supported 💚💜

I just signed up for a local XC league. Senior women 6000m senior men 10000m. I told my colleague (who doesn't run) how this is a thing and she was shocked and didn't even know women running shorter distances was a thing #ukrunchat RunEqual #ukrunners

Google 'first London Marathon' & 29th March 1981 comes up but there was a marathon in the centre of London the year before - the Avon International Women's Marathon on 3rd August - with 200 runners
