i'm going to need to write a blog post on this topic, but this is a deeply under-appreciated fact about web dev, and one of the reasons native apps tend to feel more robust than web apps. as someone who frequently amtraks through connectivity dead zones, it resonates deeply.

As explored through the cases we reported out, non-fatal shootings present a different aftermath than fatal shootings: medical recovery and legal fallout. washingtonpost.com/investigations…

From 2015-2020, officers from those 156 depts shot and killed 2,137 people. They shot and wounded an additional 1,609 people. Black people, overrepresented in fatal shootings, were even more disproportionately represented in non-fatal shootings washingtonpost.com/investigations…

today, as part of WaPo's Unaccountable project, we published an analysis of 5 years of non-fatal police shootings (in which the person shot survives) from 156 depts across the country -- a massive 2-year public records team effort (quick thread) washingtonpost.com/investigations…

Fun. There's actually WAY more 'hidden' netflix genres like these, the most complete list is from the unogs.com API here: rapidapi.com/unogs/api/unog… (see the Genres endpoint Example Response) 647 genres there.

I'm gonna start a new business called Cassandra Consulting. You hire me to come listen to all your employees, identify the one who's been frantically trying to get you to understand how badly your current plan is going to backfire, and tell you to listen to them.

I'm doing a giveaway. Three copies of A Thief in the Night, the new Audible Original, up for grabs: just reply to this tweet with an offensive epithet for Boris Johnson. (Or if you have an Audible sub or already have that, you can pick any of my self published books instead.)

My client paid hundreds of dollars for the privilege of using a machine that had been sabotaged by the greed and incompetence of its manufacturer

And they had no recourse at all. How are they supposed to figure this out? With what mental models?

so here's a story

I volunteer helping seniors with their technology issues. One of my regulars came in with a Lenovo laptop. It still had a retail sticker; I imagine she bought it used, for over $500

'I bought this so recently, how is it already so slow,' she asked me

Stunning and devastating opening from Newsnight tonight.
Harsh, yes. Media students (and current broadcast journalists!) take note: your edit is nothing without the right choice of music. And oh boy this is quite the choice.

This idea that unless you know the math, you can't regulate it, or understand its impacts on society really dupes regulators as well because they feel insecure about not 'knowing' how it works.

I have my PhD in 'AI' & spent my career in tech as an engineer & then researcher. The skills required to understand how a system harms society aren't the same as those required to build it.

Ppl don't need to know how face recognition works to know that it harms them.
