#OnThisDay in 1965, Luna 5 crashed into the Moon's surface.
It was launched by the USSR and intended to be the first soft landing of a spacecraft on the moon, however did not fire its main engine and impacted the Copernicus crater, seen below.

John recently carried out a UK Space Agency funded University of Brighton experiment measuring blood flow in the foot during microgravity. π

#OnThisDay in 1992, the Space Shuttle Endeavour launched for the first time. The mission featured the longest US spacewalk since Apollo 17.
The mission also rescued an Intelsat VI satellite, reinstalled its perigee kick motor, and placed it back into geostationary orbit.
