Very surreal to be interviewed on Latvian TV but amazing to be given such a platform to talk about the importance of Maths and my work on Ocean Pollution.

Watch the full segment at the link below (although it is of course in Latvian - I have a voiceover):

What an amazing day RTU - a HUGE thank you to everyone that came out on a Saturday morning to learn some maths, and to everyone that stayed behind to have me sign their calculators (and laptops??!). I’m now even more excited for round 2 tomorrow :)

A.I. has come a long way in the last 8 years, but I still remember the excitement of watching AlphaGo defeat a Master Go player back in 2016.

Reminisce with TRM intern Clare Teng with a 3-part series on the OG of modern artificial intelligence. Part I:

Tempelfjorden glacier. The sea ice hasn’t reached this far for 20 years, with temperatures on Svalbard having risen by 4 degrees in the last half century. The islands are warming 6x faster than the global average which is why they are such a hotspot for climate research.

When in Barentsburg… a special 78% shot at 78 degrees North. Our guide explained it is a tradition amongst polar explorers to drink a shot of alcohol of strength equivalent to the latitude you have reached. An experience for sure!

More polar bears than people… Hello Svalbard! Polar bears in the Barents Sea area are either “coastal” or “pelagic”. The coastal bears range over 200 square km, whilst the pelagic bears cover an area up to 2000 times larger. What proportion of the Barents Sea do they cover?

Incredible to see tigers in the wild, with only 3682 remaining in India. There were 100,000 in the early 1900’s before numbers plummeted to 50,000 in 1930, and only 1827 in 1972. Based on the 3 data points when would the tiger population die out assuming the trend had continued?

After a hiatus of 1339 days I'm pleased to be back hosting the legendary 'Carnival of Mathematics' from The Aperiodical. The number is 226, which is both a deficient and happy number. Read for a summary of all things maths from the internet in the past month.

Leopard safari in Jaipur. The coat patterns on leopards are a “diffusion-driven instability”. The size of the domain determines if the instability is 1D (stripes) or 2D (spots), which means spotted bodies and striped tails are possible, but NOT striped bodies and spotted tails.
