Many thanks to the growers & advisers who helped us pull together 6 paddock scale trials over the past 2 weeks as part of the new DIVERSE FARMS project. A great initiative by CSIRO to upscale the GRDC Farming Systems research, collaborating with NSW DPI, growers & advisers.

They let me back out into the field for a couple days😊
Good to help Gabe Gabe Brown finishing the pre-sow soil cores GRDC CSIRO Greenethorpe FS trial. The Feast (sown 9.2.24) approx 4t/ha DM, had it's 1st grazing-mechanical, but 2nd grazing in July will be with sheep.

Huge few weeks for Grassroots Agronomy finalising fantastic grower/advisor partnerships.CSIRO team working with Charlie French & Daniel Sweeney at Burcher site. PredictaB, 0-2m & 5cm pH cores combine with Eva Moffitt EM & pad scale grid map to characterise site. Canola sown into moist soil😊

Using a single disc seeder? On average, there was a 17%, 28% & 37% reduction in canola establishment as MAP increased from 50, 100 and 150kg/ha compared to Nil MAP. Be aware of your SBU%. GRDC North NSW DPI Agronomy

Top job Gabe managing the CSIRO GRDC Greenethorpe Farm Systems experiment 2024-27. Early sown “to-be” grazed Feast powering away. Early un-grazed Feast, Benatas vetch/Oat mix & Illabo being sown into heavy stubble. 7th experiment yr (3rd phase) for all systems. Lots to learn

Are you sowing enough canola seeds? Here’s some results derived from an GRDC project that could help adjust seeding rates (kg/ha) based on small, medium or large seed size. Hope it helps.

Last year we learnt as little as 5mm was enough to achieve 50% Canola establishment in April on dry Mallee sand! This year we went earlier before Easter before 4 days above 30c and we still achieved it. GRDC

Applying lime in the Mallee for a new GRDC South sandy soils project. Acidity in this paddock confirmed with soil diagnosis by Mel Fraser and Veris mapping by Sam Trengove. Treatment strips comparing +\- lime and +\- ripping and spading (+both). Therese Mcbeath Stirling Roberton

Managing pests using beneficial insects. 🐞

Led by us and Cesar Australia, the Grains Research and Development Corporation investments are a collective investment into understanding of the impact of beneficial invertebrates like ladybeetles in canola. csiro.au/en/news/All/Ne…

Great to see the CSIRO BARS irrigation system operational. After constructing a 60ML dam, installing piping between 2018-20, irrigation not required between 2020-23 (decile 8-10years), this is what the system was built for! Early sown experiments between industry & researchers🤗
