The debate about the economic impact of decentralization has been misguided.
It should not be about whether more #decentralization is needed, but about whether the resources subnational #governments have suffice for the responsibilities they face.

#CohesionPolicy has been at forefront of EU response supporting healthcare and providing substantial liquidity to businesses. It proved to be agile & effective in adapting rapidly to the crisis.

Extremely honoured to have been awarded the 2020 Best Paper prize in Regional Studies.
Very grateful to the editors, for their trust in my research, and to my co-authors Lewis Dijkstra & Hugo Poelman, without whom this award would have been impossible.

Increasingly our social and economic future depends on #cities , but, in order to truly understand and improve cities, we need to have far better and more homogeneous definitions and measurements of what cities are. Lewis Dijkstra at #ersa2019Lyon
A thwarted no-deal by UK Parl. + anticipated elections perfect scenario for Boris Johnson: he gets another chance to campaign as fact-free clown rather than irresponsible kamikaze. My column today in NRC (in Dutch). Tnx Fintan O'Toole.

We had another message for the #TourdeFrance in Brussels yesterday, one for which we needed the cameraman in the heli. Alas, this one didn't make it past the censor 😅. #GrandDepartBxl #tourdeforce

The rural-urban divide is not the only factor behind the anti-European #vote . Economic stagnation, especially in areas suffering from long industrial decline, is the main driver of #euroscepticism
