The U.S. presidential election could determine Ukraine’s fate — and Trump could easily win that election, Max Boot 🇺🇦🇺🇸 writes. wapo.st/3WrMVTQ

Putin wants us to believe that there's no daylight between him and the Russian people--that they uncritically accept everything he tells them (especially about the war in Ukraine). But I argue that the reality is far more complicated.

Is America back for good or only for now?

The new U.S. aid package will reestablish a critical flow of weapons to Ukraine’s military, but the war will hinge greatly on which side can ramp up and sustain its firepower and troop numbers in the months ahead.

Is America back for good or only for now? There is no way anyone can answer that question with any degree of confidence. And that, in turn, should give pause to U.S. allies about whether they can still count on the United States. wapo.st/4dfwnod

Things might have worked out very differently if Mike Johnson had not discovered his inner Arthur Vandenberg. Imagine if hard-right Rep. Jim Jordan were speaker; the bill might never have reached the floor and Ukraine might have lost the war this year. wapo.st/4dfwnod

The belated passage of aid for Ukraine reassured US allies that America is back. But they would be well advised to act as though the United States were, in fact, turning its back on the world — because there is a very real risk that could still happen. wapo.st/4dfwnod

Agonizing as it was to get Ukraine aid through Congress, the $61 billion is likely to run out by the end of the year. That means another bill will be necessary in early 2025. If Trump wins, it is extremely unlikely that he would support such legislation. wapo.st/4dfwnod

US allies would be making a mistake if they take the passage of the Ukraine aid bill as a signal they don’t need to pursue greater strategic autonomy. They should act as if the US were turning its back on the world because that could still happen. wapo.st/4dfwnod

Trump has revived the phrase “America First” from well-deserved obloquy since Dec. 7, 1941. There are plenty of ambitious GOP opportunists willing to abandon Reaganite foreign-policy principles to pursue the political rewards of neo-isolationism. wapo.st/4dfwnod

Lithuania's Foreign Minister spoke for many relieved allies when he wrote after the House vote on Ukraine: “Good to have you back, America.” But is America back for good or only for now? There is no way anyone can answer that question with any confidence. wapo.st/4dfwnod

The U.S. presidential election could determine Ukraine’s fate — and Trump could easily win that election. Even if he doesn’t, aid to Ukraine will still be in jeopardy if Republicans control either house of Congress. wapo.st/4dfwnod

U.S. allies had a collective freakout earlier this year when aid to Ukraine was stalled in Congress and Trump threatened to let Russia “do whatever the hell they want.” The passage of the Ukraine aid bill should soothe frayed nerves. wapo.st/4dfwnod

He should be NBA MVP. Already one of the handful of best Knicks players of all time—after only 2 years as a Knick.

China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia are cooperating to weaken the United States and dismantle the current U.S.-led world order, warn Andrea Kendall-Taylor and Richard Fontaine. How should the United States respond?
