30 years ago an 18 year old idealistic posh white boy from England, ecstatic at the victory of the Anti-Apartheid movement, & trying to work out what solidarity was, went to go to live in a South African township. Forever grateful to the community who took the kid in to teach him

Raymond Friel OBE Great question Raymond! Reflecting on younger me, my solidarity had way too much “I’ll help, here’s how!” With huge patience many helped me learn “I’ll muck in so I can listen & find out from people who’ve learnt from living what can be done & they’ll help me find a part to play”

one of the greatest lessons i’ve learned in organizing is to not blame people for being surprised when they find out how bad the world is, even when it hits them late in life. not people who feign ignorance, but people who are truly surprised

i will always defend the right to be surprised, and unlike social media, you can’t just update your bio because it’s hot. it may take years to form an analysis and a commitment to a struggle. many people are now acting from their conscience which is great, a great start

The real power is love. And if we haven't already seen a world transformed by love, then it's because we haven't really tried out the power of love —St Oscar Romero, 5th Sunday of Easter (B), 1979. Read/listen buff.ly/3gNZdRU

Not the main point but when you watch the interview it’s so clear what a lovely person she is, what a great teacher she must be, and how she is not only a book-smart philosopher but a profoundly *wise* one. That there are people like her gives us hope.

There are basically 2 types of people on here:
A) Those organising to end war not only in their own homeland but also in Gaza, Sudan & more.
B) Those who never help anyone but opine “these youths speaking of Gaza are silent on the constitutional crisis in Kiribati, how telling!”
