Many people, including us, were excited by the recent news that the Javan tiger might still be extant, but it appears there may be some new developments on how the analysis was handled: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

It’s often believed by people that chimpanzees are savagely aggressive and bonobos solve all their differences peacefully. Turns out, that’s far from the truth: cell.com/current-biolog…

This is so unscientific and dangerous. The cattle industry must not get public license to give avian influenza a different name. It is H5N1: bird flu. It has a record of transmission between birds & mammals, and that makes it a potential danger to many more animals, including us

God, this tracking shot of the cheetah with the convoy of vans in the background is the most stunningly depressing piece of wildlife photography I've ever seen.

Pretty surreal to see what is normally viewed as an elusive rugged mountain animal just running through a suburb.

This 'first look' seems more Al the more I look at it, though whatever's going on with the cub is certainly the most glaring signal. I guess they allocated effort and budget to match audience enthusiasm*

*which is none, for those wondering

As a vulture researcher myself, I have come across so many incidents where people asked me to bring them bones, claws, beaks and even feathers of vultures for them. Poisoning is certainly one of the biggest threats, however there are many other threats endangering the vultures!

It gets so much worse, they're literally advocating for eco-terrorism by inciting people to release non-native zoo animals into the wild

I highly recommend anyone here who actually cares about animals to report this guy immediately

Sadly another was killed this week in Hawf mountains of Yemen. At least 3 leopards of this
Critically Endangered subspecies were lost in less than 2 years. If killings continue, the remaining small population of the leopard in Hawf could be lost for ever.

Failing GPS collars deployed on a high profile species in a sensitive system … 😑

Collar companies need to do better

I'm quite sceptical of these kinds of approaches, esp the 'de-extinction' approach from Colossal. Rather than high-tech, costly restorations, wouldn't it be much better to focus those ££ on maintaining wild habitat & existing ?

African penguins & other seabird species are headed for extinction if nothing is done urgently by both the South African and Namibian gov's. BirdLife South Africa 🇿🇦 is taking their gov to court over not effectively protecting the penguins' main prey - sardines. 1/

If you've seen this image (an Australian feral cat has killed a Pink cockatoo; version at left Mark Marathon CC BY-SA 4.0), it shows a diorama at Alice Springs Museum. This doesn't downplay the fact that cats kill cockatoos and other birds, nor that they have impacts on wildlife.
