The Russia-backed regime in Georgia just pivoted toward Moscow no less decisively than Yanukovych did in 2013.

Which bipartisan pair of US senators wants to instantly become statesmen by going to Tbilisi right now the way John McCain and Chris Murphy 🟧 went to Kyiv in 2013?

🧵Overriding the veto of the Kremlin-inspired and backdated Foreign Influence Law is a tragedy for the Georgian people, but it is also a strategic blow to Western interests and a clear geopolitical victory for the Kremlin. (1/5)

We told Georgia’s Russian regime a mln times to not drag us towards Russia, as we belong to Europe. However, they didnt listen and passed the Russian law. Civil society has just announced public disobedience. The regime must understand - we’re serious about defending our freedom.

Georgian Dream passed the Russian style law. My message to fellow Georgians is the following: Nothing happened that we didn't know was happening. The Russian regime made treason official. Dress comfortably, bring your friends and come out to Rustaveli. Freedom must be protected.

Georgian Parliament right now, with the ruling Russian regime poised to override the president's veto on Foreign Agents Law & enact it. They're pushing it through with aid of masked men amidst massive protests. This day will be remembered in🇬🇪history as a grievous act of treason.

“If Putin succeeds in asserting full political control over Georgia, he could be emboldened to use force against Moldova. Any success by Putin in Tbilisi will impact morale in Ukraine, as will any successful political or military attacks against Moldova.”

Have written for The New Statesman about the battle for Georgia's soul and how a flood of Russian propaganda is creating a deep generational battle.

whatever your politics: can't think of many other countries where marching soldiers are nice enough to respect a sleeping street dog.

It's high time the Allies took action to drive the Russian enemy out of Ukraine.
Not tomorrow, but now.
In fact, I've been asking for this since February 24, 2022. It would have saved over a hundred thousand lives and increased our security.
A thread.

JUST IN! Blinken on Georgia National Day:

U.S. “will continue to strongly support the aspirations of the Georgian people for a Euro-Atlantic future.  We urge Georgia’s leaders to take the steps necessary to move Georgia forward in the right direction.”

Celebration of Georgian Independence Day on May 26, either in 1919 or 1920. Our first republic, established in 1918, didn't last long as the Soviet occupation army invaded us in 1921, taking away our independence but they couldn't take away our dream of freedom. Same fight today.

Independence has never come easy for Georgia, but no country has fought so valiantly for so long to achieve it. It’s important for Georgians to know they have support from the West and their struggle is not in vain.
