New from Dan Schrider and myself, a look at the genetic consequences of range expansion in polyploids, and the role those expansions (and their genetic consequences) play in the evolution of diploidization. biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 1/n

So happy to be a part of this work with Dr. Emily H. DuVal Dr. Elizabeth Hobson and Courtney Fitzpatrick! We show that mistakes that females make when trying to infer what others find attractive can lead to the maintenance of variation in preferences and traits, among other cool patterns!

New paper out with Parul Johri and Jeff Jensen in Evolution Journal, evaluating the power we have to detect recurrent selective sweeps using composite likelihood and linkage based methods. (Free-to-view for a week as its an Editor's Choice). academic.oup.com/evolut/advance…

Taken together, our results suggest that caution is required when performing sweep inference. Modeling the persistent population genetic processes using simulation will improve our ability to detect episodic forces, but even then sweep detection can prove challenging.

New work led by Zoë Humphries and Bianca Sacchi: When things are bad they get even worse! We assembled and characterized the rapid genome evolution and extensive degeneration in young Y chromosomes that arose in a repetitive region of low recombination biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Variant after variant of SARS-CoV-2 has spread over the past year. But what does that mean for the long-term burden of COVID-19? Check out our new preprint: 'Endemic means change as SARS-CoV-2 evolves' Caroline Colijn @ailenemacp medrxiv.org/content/10.110…

Congratulations to Valeria Añorve-Garibay on getting her bachelor's degree in Genomic Sciences after defending her thesis today. She has been leading two projects during her senior year in collaboration with Emilia Huerta and Mashaal Sohail . It is an honor to work with this rising star.

Super-excited to share our latest on the genomic effects of whaling! Proud of Sergio Nigenda Meixi Lin for driving this work and Andres Moreno-Estrada & Bob Wayne for leading it. This project meant a lot to Bob, especially during his illness. l know he'd be glad to see it published!
