I’m always blown away by the ability of Alfons and Adrie Kennis to bring these ancient people ‘back to life’ - no longer just a skull, the woman we know as Shanidar Z gazes at us across the millennia.

At this point I think we can say that hominins inc. #Neanderthals were capable of this, but the challenge archaeologically lies in finding *robust* evidence of use; consumption isn't always enough eg yarrow is medicinal but it's also a tasty herb.

Wonderful evening talking to colleagues & students at Cambridge Archaeology about #SecretsOfTheNeanderthals & challenges of communicating archaeology in film - and how utterly magical to have both the stunning new reconstruction & the actual Shanidar Z skull both there!

neanderthal smile. Neanderthals apparently used their incisors as sort of vice probably while working with leather, so those teeth would experience considerable wear. while we might consider the feature unappealing I wonder what they thought about it. sign of a hard worker?
