1 week from today, voting will open to authorize a strike of 48,000 academic workers (including grad students, postdocs, and TAs) across UC.

This would be the largest strike of academic workers in US history.

New push to get California universities and state agencies to hire undocumented students. Legal scholars say 1986 law does not apply to state gov't employees. Every year 27K students graduate high school w/o work authorization or access to DACA.

This is a superlative piece from Harold Meyerson, a longtime Los Angeles politics observer, putting the context behind the racist tirades from Latino city councilmembers. Today's must read.

A cautionary tale: Obama the anti-racist social democrat, before he abandoned redistributive politics and economic populism as he turned from community organizing to electoral politics. Even then, he preferred to blame the growth of the right on the left. nyti.ms/3rBbRYv

Essentially no oversight of PPP by Trump administration. No one knows how much was stolen but it may be $100 billion or more of federal government money. A mind boggling scam.

A CSU union is willing to strike to get the raises Newsom vetoed.

“Teamsters are determined to continue our fight for salary steps and fair pay for CSU workers, at the bargaining table and – if necessary – the strike lines.' -- Local 2010 Secretary-Treasurer Jason Rabinowitz

When the California state legislature pushed UC to enroll 30k additional CA residents as undergraduates, were they REALLY asking for UC to do so by pushing students into online summer courses taught by grad students? Because that's UC's plan right now.

And this final pandemic piece is a distilled shot of the argument I’ve been brewing for 3 yrs. This has been soul-crushing work. We constantly forfeited the chance to do better. But that chance still exists, and we can’t afford the luxury of nihilism. 6/

Thank you to @CAGovernor Gavin Newsom for signing ! As Vice Chair of the CA Latino Caucus, I know this historic new law will help protect the rights of our farmworkers, who are overwhelmingly Latino, to organize to form or join a union free from intimidation. 1/3

This is a really big deal. Threat of loss of health care, even more than loss of wages, is one of the greatest fears that public school teachers I've talked with have about going on strike even for just a few days.

One thing I learned from watching the series based on this article: an essential part of the capital necessary to launch the Fox TV channel came from cost savings Rupert Murdoch achieved by firing the 6000+ workers who published his UK newspapers and breaking their union in 1986.
