Most of the gas we produce is, and will continue to be, exported. Australias gas industry is an enormous parasite - it gets huge subsidies, diverts labour and resources, and a single concentrated export drives up our exchange rate which hurts other Australian industries.

If someone thinks AI takes out human subjectivity from interpretation and it's a good thing, then they don't understand a single thing about AI, nor qualitative research

Article: “one of the advantages of using ChatGPT to analyze qualitative interviews is it eliminates the possibility of human variability in interpreting research”

Me: but qualitative research values subjectivity. “human variability in interpreting research” is expected.

Check out this super cool study—some “living fossils” have genetic blueprints that change more slowly than other organisms, which means they truly are living “fossils” (a term some paleontologists have disliked, because it implies a lack of evolution). Wow!

This is a timely question:

“If the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is unwilling to speak without fear or favour about the need for urgent national action to stop new fossil fuel development to save at least some of the world’s greatest living organism, then who will?”

One of the things I love about indigenous research approaches is the emphasis they give to creating relationships of care, dignity, respect & trust between researchers and researched communities. It feels so right, so human. Research is not just about gathering data & leaving.

💥 New paper 💥

We discover a form of covert racism in LLMs that is triggered by dialect features alone, with massive harms for affected groups.

For example, GPT-4 is more likely to suggest that defendants be sentenced to death when they speak African American English.

STUDY: Cars are rewiring our brains to ignore all the bad stuff about driving. “A new study reveals how unconscious bias leads us to neglect negative externalities of driving. You may call it ‘car brain,’ but this research team calls it motonormativity.” theverge.com/2023/1/31/2357…

Disappointing to still see these kinds of images posted by large orgs considering the recent studies highlighting their negative impacts on audience’s attitudes and behaviours towards wildlife. Worse yet, they’re deleting any comments that raise these concerns. 1)

Sadly, to this day, when you submit a manuscript to a journal for publication, your main worry is whether your paper would be reviewed by reviewers who understand qualitative research or not.
