I transcribed the first ~3 minutes of Mumia Abu-Jamal’s call from prison with the students of the CUNY Gaza solidarity encampment. The imprisoned journalist and former Black Panther has been jailed for over 42 of his 70 years.

I love teaching at CUNY because my students are majority Black & brown, first gen, they work, lots of parents, folks with immigration issues.

That makes their protest EXTRA brave. It also means community should step up and support them.

So make it a point to go up there …

The monitor reported last night that 'use of force' is up 135% since 2016.

When I was in college, I was the victim of a hate crime. I defended myself and was almost arrested for it while the cops let the perpetrators walk away.

This is why hate crime enhancements and over reliance on policing will not eradicate the harm.
