Britain's Brexit drift. New post on my Brexit & Beyond Blog. The latest Brexit news may be slow, but fundamental structural change is happening without any accompanying strategy. Sunak can't provide it, but will Starmer? No one knows. chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2024/04/britai…

🚨🚨 Cracking read this week again from Chris Grey on his Brexit blog, just worth reading only for his lovely spot-on cricket analogy for Britain's 's drift: ' The crowd got bored long ago, and are huddled down under macs and umbrellas.' 🧵

Incredible that, all these years on, Rees-Mogg is still conflating issues of trade terms, regulation, and border security - and still doesn't understand what Brexit actually means for those things, apparently.

Brexit is the trade catastrophe that keeps delivering more bad news: new border checks to add £2bn to costs and fuel inflation.

This is obviously going to be the key demand of the Farage/ERG right over the coming years. They need another referendum, to rekindle and re-enact the politics of Brexit.

It seems the European Court of Human Rights has chucked out the latest attempt to litigate the loss of EU citizenship due to UK decision to leave the EU. Reminder that comments on a crowdfunder website are not a source of law, and scare quoting 'interpretation' doesn't change it.

Damning verdict in Simon Nixon's latest newsletter: 'this is above all a verdict on the political chaos and uncertainty that has arisen in Britain since Brexit.'

“A huge investor in the oil industry might want to plough money into climate denial. Should we be forced to match-fund those donations? And should the charity be able to disguise whose work it is really doing?” – Jo Maugham

Private equity firms are a massive reason why our houses are more expensive, our high streets are more depressing, and our economy is more unequal.

We urgently need to do something about them.

Great piece by Prem Sikka 👇🏻

New piece from me separating fact from fantasy about UK Special Economic Zones, including Freeports. May interest ALASTAIR CAMPBELL Rory Stewart Carol Vorderman.

And, yes, I know some of my followers are not going to like it.

This is very good (I'm out of it, now, but I recognize it), and it really matters. The UK's universities are one of the very few things which are still (just about) world-class, something of which politicians constantly boast but which their policies constantly undermine.

There's no post today on my Brexit & Beyond Blog (it resumes next week), but here's my new piece on Byline Times disentangling some of the confusion & misinformation about Freeports etc. being 'states within a state': bylinetimes.com/2024/04/04/fre…
