Opening keynote Sonia Cabell acknowledges her bestie researcher Tricia Zucker in her first words 💕, and then reminds us of the need for “conversation counts mindset” in working with all learners.

A philosophy term that broadly means 'like me-ness'. I read it last night, didn't write it down, and now it would come in handy. Any takers? I'll recognise it when I see it again.

Another child follows in the wake of the previous child’s play, exploring sliding and aligning shapes.

Some rules of engagement develop:

“All the shapes must be touching”

“Or they can fit inside another one”

“I’ve made waves…

and circles!”

Important for all classrooms! The famous James Britton quote comes to mind “reading & writing float on a sea of talk”. Also, Peter Johnston points out that thinking together (conversation) leads to better thinking alone. (from memory- not sure of exact quote).

“All talk is not necessarily conversation…”, Sonia Cabell If just 6% of kindergarten day is spent building oral language skills, we need to think about students as active participants in developing, building , and expanding oral language skills.

Leah Mermelstein Consulting (LMC) I love stories that bust the false binary between high expectations and just meeting our kids as people. We don’t have to pick teams. The only side we need to be on is the kids’.

This is a compelling and interesting collection of threads. It's worth keeping two things in mind as you scroll: 75% of the teaching profession is women and there's a phenomenon in education known as the 'glass escalator.'

Our op-ed The Perils of Outsourcing Education is in today's paper.
Outsourcing education to private organizations and donors is not in the best interest of our students or schools. We stand in support of a robustly, publicly funded public education system.

Even in a lesson in a particular context students may not learn in exactly the same way. Give teaching back to teachers.

But why this complexity? Because students are human beings, rather than chemicals in labs, subject to replicable treatments with replicable results. 3/3
