Richard Haviland Exactly this. We're losing ourselves in detail and normalise the rejection of people in need. We're discussing procedure and are losing sight of humanity.

I wonder what the response would be if, instead of a leading and convoluted question about Rwanda, they’d asked ‘Do you believe the UK should allow people whose lives are in danger to request asylum, and provide safe and legal routes for those wishing to do so?’

The Home Office just told an Immigration Judge that a traumatised Afghan 13-yr-old, living by himself in a Middle East country, doesn’t need to come to the UK to be reunited with what’s left of his family, because he can enjoy family life with them via WhatsApp

Since the Conservatives no longer believe in conservatism, you can see why they’re confused by parties who pursue policies consistent with their own name.

All the arguments I’ve seen in favour of Labour’s decision to accept Elphicke boil down to ‘that’s politics’ or ‘that’s the system’, with an extra slice of ‘don’t be so naive’.

But the thing is, you can boil everything down to that if you really want to.

Do we really want to?
