Farmers and politicians are scared that trying to prevent an avian flu pandemic will hurt the economy. Imagine what an avian flu pandemic will do to the economy.

Thanks to quick collaborative action between AB Wildfire, the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation and Woodland County, wildfire WWF021 in the Whitecourt Forest Area is under control at 2.5 ha. We're expecting windy conditions this weekend. Call 310-FIRE to report fire in the forest.

Wildfire MWF017 is still out of control and is growing to the east, driven by strong winds. It is now 200 hectares and is located 25 km SW of Fort McMurray. Firefighters and helicopters are working hard to contain it and firefighting efforts will continue overnight.

UPDATE MAY 10, 2024 @ 7 PM: This wildfire has grown to 1,000 ha and is now 16 km SW of Fort McMurray. An evacuation alert has been issued by rmwoodbuffalo for residents of Saprae Creek and Fort McMurray. Follow the RMWB for the latest evacuation info.

UPDATE - MAY 10, 2024 @ 9 PM: Wildfire MWF017 remains out of control at 1,000 hectares in size. It is still located 16 km SW of Fort McMurray. Night vision helicopters will continue to work on this wildfire overnight.

After burning in the Whitecourt forest area for over a year, wildfire WWF-023-2023 has been extinguished. This wildfire was detected May 5, 2023, and was fought with the support of firefighters from across the world. Thanks to all the firefighters who helped.

Thanks to rain received over the last couple days we are able to remove the fire restriction in some parts of the province. However, the rain did not reach everywhere which means a fire ban is now in effect in the Grande Prairie Forest Area. For more info: albertafirebans.ca
