Laura Kuenssberg Now Laura Kuenssberg Would you attach to your tweet the numbers of times you challenged the previous governments about their inaction regarding Grenfell? You know. That went on for over 7 years. Each and every challenge. The current Gov has been in power for just c7 weeks

Recombinant variant XEC looks a likely next challenger against the dominant DeFLuQE variants. Here are the leading countries reporting XEC. Strong growth has been reported from Denmark during August, reaching 18%. France and Spain have reached 11%. 🧵

XEC first appeared in Berlin in late June.  It has since spread across Europe, North America and Asia. Around 335 samples have now been reported, from 21 countries on 3 continents. Czech Republic, Finland and Austria have reported their first samples in the last week or so. 🧵

XEC is a mix of KS.1.1 (FLiRT, although XEC did not get the R346T mutation) and KP.3.3 (FLuQE). XEC might have an advantage from it's unusual T22N mutation, in combination with the FLuQE mutations. 🧵

NYC Mayor Eric Adams, who has been pushing a mask ban for NYC, has again tested positive for COVID. A timely reminder that now is a good time to wear a mask, and to call your representatives and tell them to speak out against mask bans.

Yesterday I was sat in the park with a friend who's a vocal coach.. I *casually asked whether the pro singers were having problems after Covid. "Oh yes. And strangely some of them have heart problems too. Do you think it's connected?" 👀

Eric Topol Ziyad Al-Aly, MD The Lancet Infectious Diseases I agree, really important, but it needs combination therapy trials asap. Antivirals suppress, immunity eliminates, and this hasn't happened in chronics. So, could lead to selection of resistance as seen easily in culture. Suggest protease, nuc, and molnupiravir as ≈ ribavirin.

Tom Andrews Blake Murdoch Eric Topol Is there anything that HASN'T been blamed on lockdowns? Shrinkflation in chocolate bars, perhaps?! 😉 Tyler Black, MD has insight. As Tom says, lockdown is a last resort, more severe if delayed, and after the 1st, should have been avoided. They exposed inequality and fragility.
