Whilst the forest still looks asleep the first signs of Spring will start to appear as buds burst and new green shoots appear. Look out for fresh willow buds, catkins and blossom on the wild cherries around Bowness Knott car park.

Its great to see all our Black Galloways together even in the rain. Our free roaming Galloways have brought the valley bottom alive over the last decade or more. Their selective grazing and micro seed bed making has helped increase bird number by 63% which is brilliant.

The continuing rainfall is keeping the River Liza high and meandering freely across its floodplain. Whilst leading a group from Cumbria Connect we were excited to see two adult otters playing around in the flood waters. Has anyone else seen otters in the valley recently?

As Spring tries to wrestle the season from winter its great to see snowdrops lining the lanes leading to Ennerdale and along the shore of Ennerdale Water. Have you spotted any other signs of spring, do share them with us.

The cold weather last week saw a couple of sightings of a Kingfisher around the shores of Ennerdale Water which is quite unusual. They are usually seen down the Ehen but not around the lake. Maybe making a winter foray to search for alternate fishing sites?

The cold clear nights of late November are when the Arctic Char leave Ennerdale Water to spawn in the River Liza. Every year the Environment Agency check the population's physical and genetic health. Thanks to Wild Ennerdale volunteer Steve for this photo from last week.

Great to hear that 24 Whopper Swans stopped off at Ennerdale yesterday on their mammoth migration from Iceland. They fly at high altitude and make the 1500km trip in one go, no stops. Thanks to Peter Ulrich for the sightings and picture.

If you are up at the head of the valley and see large bags filled with stone, its the dedicated National Trust staff of the Fix the Fells Team. In a couple of weeks the stone will be flown by helicopter onto the high mountain paths to improve the surfacing and reduce erosion.

Whilst surveying the medieval shielings 1800ft up at Great Cove this week we were joined by an inquisitive little stoat who seemed to have made its home in the old wall foundations. We love it when wild nature decides to hang around and watch.

The shorter daylight and cooler nights are a sign to the trees that Autumn is coming. Many birch in the valley have started displaying yellow leaves. We can't wait for this years colourful display.
