Some parts of the sward at Seaford Head looked amazing today. Excellent short chalk grassland created by sheep grazing. Now just to deal with the remaining Bramble, Tor Grass and Old Man's Beard.

Orange Conch, Commophila aeneana, from Butcherlands the other week looking a bit worn, but still so orange in life not captured by the photo. Only the 4th W. Sussex record and 10th all Sussex record. But not a new site though because guess who found it first... Graeme Lyons

Loved this from Sussex Wildlife Trust πŸ¦” #swtphotoposts. Become a citizen scientist by contributing your photo of the same landscape so that they can monitor change! Great work!

Malling Down Butterfly transect totals. 38 years of regular monitoring. Almost all butterfly species had a poor year. The warm wet winter and hot dry summer may have been significant factors. I understand it was a poor butterfly year at many sites.

Such important long-term data collected by CrispinHolloway at Malling Down shedding light on population trends over decades. A 7-year cycle in Small Heath as clear as day

3.24pm - phone call, it's Mike, there's a phalarope on the pool near Gasson's Ruin. 3.52pm - photo of a first winter Red-necked Phalarope - a seabird on it's way from Scandinavia to the Persian Gulf, stopping off to refuel on tiny shrimps and flies. 1/2

Waltham Brooks Sussex Wildlife Trust πŸ¦” this afternoon - huge numbers of ducks inc at least 350 teal and 55 shoveler, a passing marsh harrier, but the best were my first fieldfares of the autumn: at least 100 present, and a few redwings.

Probably lauded as the greatest autumn for twitching rare birds I wonder just how many people look and realise just how devoid of birds most British habitats are now

UK Turtle Dove Survey results are grim reading. 2021 survey estimates 2,092 territories, down from 125,00 pairs in 1970. Atlas data reinforce the sense of loss. Survey by RSPB, UK RBBP, KOS with support from BTO and Natural England doi.org/10.1080/000636…
